Meet the Artisans

Wasantha Chandrasekara who is 45 years old grew up with wood carvings in the background. He provides for his wife Lalani and 12 year old daughter Madushika through earnings from this craft. Before the tsunami, he had a sales outlet cum workshop, from which he earned a monthly income of Rs. 25,000 (USD 250). He took a bank loan of Rs.300,000 to expand his business. The loan was to be paid back within 5 years. With his shop destroyed by the tsunami and hardley any tourists coming to the area, his present monthly income has dropped to Rs. 5,000. Wasantha hopes that he will be able to sell his products at the Fair and business will pick up afterwards.
